When Fashion Meets Interior Design

As Iris Apfel once stated: “Fashion and interior design are one and the same.” Fashion trends not only inspire what we wear but also, how we decorate our space. And when the subject is decor, we must agree that there is nothing more fashionable than tile and stone.

Like fashion, interior design allows us to express our personality, and the use of tiles and stones in the decor of a project is exactly what brings out that ‘it factor’ that will make your space stand out.

There is a strong link connecting both industries. When we look at the behind the scenes of the creative process we see many similarities between fashion and interior design. This connection gets even stronger when we think of tile.

Tile design and color pallets are especially influenced by what’s going on in the fashion industry. With so many trendy and interesting options, adding tiles and stones into decor just gets more and more exciting every year. But what happens when fashion translates its identity through interior design? Are fashion brands leading the way also when the subject is décor?

The interior of a retail space is an extension of the brand. It allows its customers to identify the brand's personality. And just like fashion, the choices are unlimited and the only rule is to create a striking atmosphere.

Artistic Surfaces

Christian Dior opted for Alex Turco’s artistic surfaces in the ceiling of its boutiques. Alex Turco’s surfaces were used in multiple locations worldwide. This awe-inspiring design choice relates well to Dior’s idea of made to measure elegance.

Another influential French House that adorned its interior with Alex Turco’s surfaces was Louis Vuitton.

Fendi is also featuring Alex’s hand-made panels to complement the style of its showroom spaces.

Mosaics

The Italian brand Missoni created this eye-catching décor for a special event during a previous edition of Milan Fashion Week. They created a space that was fully decorated with colorful mosaics and Missoni’s iconic graphic patterns. Such a fun and creative example of how glass mosaics can be a valuable decorative resource!

Terrazzo

Maison Valentino used grey Palladiana Terrazzo in its New York flagship boutique creating a vibe that was both lavish and modern. This type of Terrazzo uses large pieces of marble to create the layout of the floor. Later, the joints in between the larger slabs are filled with standard terrazzo. The result is astonishing!

Stone

Natural stone and retail design have an interesting relationship. Many high-end brands have created a very elegant space using this timeless material.  The sky blue marble in this Céline boutique in Miami create a space that is imaginative and inspiring.

The staircase at the Fine Watches department at Harrods, is a work of art. The sweeping staircase is covered in book-matched marble which perfectly reflects the art of watchmaking, and creates the sense of elegance that defines Harrods. The cream color floor is a Terrazzo flecked with fragments of mother of pearl.

Jil Sander chose soft and pale limestone walls and floors with cherry wood accents for its flagship store in Japan. The space feels warm, soulful, minimalistic, and effortlessly chic.

The result of this mix between fashion and interior design is fascinating for any décor enthusiast. As trend setters, fashion brands are introducing many interesting ideas on how to incorporate tiles and stones into their decor. We can’t think of a better place to find inspiration!
